PRIME
: PHYSIOLOGY, continued
In
addition to the after-image one gets after prolonged
observation of a colour (successive image), its
colour complimentary may appear simultaneously in
the immediately adjacent zones, which phenomenon,
he called dynamic " induction ",
an effect that I sometimes experience when concentrating
on part of the computer screen for far too long.

Chromatic
Induction: The
same colour square in the middle of squares
of different background colours and tonal
value, will appear to be different depending
upon the juxtaposition of the background
colour. The phenomenon of simultaneous
and successive
contrast,
affects all colour vision. In
the next illustration, there are four pairs,
with equal centre colours. The same colour,
of average saturation, appears opaque and
little saturated over a background of the
same but purer, tonality ( left column );
but it appears more saturated and brilliant
over a background still of the same tonality
but much saturated with black ( right column ).
Foreground colours are directly affected
by tone and colour in the background.
