PRIME: PHILOSOPHY,
CULTURE and RELIGION
I
was brought up in an Ecumenical Christian home. My father,
who became an Anglican Reader towards the end of his life,
was a great influence in my early years. However, he
also taught me to question and understand the foundations
of " belief "
itself. With the additional experience of a diversity
of other thinking and ideas, especially from living in
America; it is clear to me that our philosophical, cultural
and religious background has a baring on the way that
we see and construe
the world around us; particularly in the way that we see
and use colour. " We
are swamped with colour from the moment we are born. ",
writes Lilian Verner-Bonds, in the introduction to her
book, advocating "Colour
Healing", a recognised
alternative therapy, and philosophical approach to the
restoration of balance and good health. She argues:
"
Indeed, we are born into
a specific colour that stays with us for life. Colour
is an aspect of everything we eat, drink, touch and are
surrounded by. We use colours to describe our physical
health, attitudes, emotions and even our spiritual or
psychic experiences. Colour is an intimate part of our
being, even though most of the time we take it for granted.
However, it is impossible to be indifferent to colour.
It affects every home environment as well as those of
factories, offices, schools and hospitals. Even the
colours of your clothes reflect your personality and influence
your mood, and colour has a practical bearing on all your
personal relationships.
